3 Skin Mistakes Darwin Makes Every Build-Up (and Easy Fixes)

October in Darwin means one thing: the Build-Up. The air turns thick, the clouds roll in without the rain, and by 10am your face feels like it has run a marathon. Makeup slides, foundation separates, and pores that behaved all Dry Season suddenly feel blocked.

After more than 20 years in the beauty industry, we see the same pattern every year at Hannah Spa. Most Build-Up breakouts are not caused by the weather alone. They come from a few small habits that feel logical in the heat but quietly make skin worse.

Here are the three we see most often, and what to do instead.

Why the Build-Up is so tough on your skin

Heat and humidity make you sweat more, and your skin tends to produce more oil. Mix that with sunscreen, makeup and Darwin dust, and pores can congest quickly. Then we walk into an air-conditioned office or car, and the cold, dry air pulls water out of the skin.

The result is a confusing combination: skin that looks shiny on the surface but feels tight, dull or rough underneath. That is why your usual routine might suddenly stop working in October.

Mistake 1: Skipping moisturiser because your skin feels oily

This is the most common one. When your face is shiny, moisturiser feels like the last thing you need. But oily and hydrated are not the same thing. Oil sits on the surface; hydration is the water held inside your skin. When skin is low on water, it can feel even oilier and more congested.

What to do instead:

  • Swap rich creams for a lightweight gel or gel-cream moisturiser labelled oil-free or non-comedogenic.
  • Look for hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin.
  • Apply it morning and night, even when it is 34 degrees outside.

Mistake 2: Scrubbing every day to “unclog” your pores

When pores feel blocked, it is tempting to scrub harder and more often. Unfortunately, harsh daily scrubbing strips your skin barrier, the protective outer layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out. A damaged barrier can leave skin red, tight, sensitive and even more prone to breakouts.

What to do instead:

  • Exfoliate gently, just once or twice a week.
  • Choose a mild exfoliant over a gritty scrub. Patch test anything new first.
  • Cleanse twice a day with a gentle gel cleanser, and again after the gym or a sweaty afternoon outdoors.

Mistake 3: Wearing SPF only on sunny days

Build-Up days are often grey and overcast, so sunscreen gets skipped. But clouds do not block UV, and in Darwin the UV level is high all year round. Daily sun exposure adds up and plays a big part in pigmentation, uneven tone and early signs of ageing.

What to do instead:

  • Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ every morning, rain, cloud or shine.
  • Pick a light fluid or gel texture made for humid weather, so it does not feel heavy.
  • Reapply every two hours when you are outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.
  • Add a hat, sunnies and shade whenever you can.

A simple Build-Up skincare routine

You do not need ten steps. In this weather, fewer and lighter layers work best.

Morning: gentle gel cleanser, a light hydrating serum, gel moisturiser, then SPF 50+.

Evening: cleanse well to remove sunscreen, sweat and makeup, use a gentle exfoliant one or two nights a week, then finish with your gel moisturiser.

When your pores need a little more help

Sometimes home care is not quite enough, especially after weeks of heat, sweat and sunscreen. That is where a professional deep cleanse can help.

Our Pores Minimizing Facial is a 90-minute treatment designed to deep-cleanse congested skin and help refine the look of pores. It is also a calm, cool hour and a half away from the Build-Up heat, which might be the best part.

If you have persistent or painful breakouts, or your skin changes suddenly, please see your GP or a dermatologist as well.

Quick answers

Do I really need moisturiser if I have oily skin?
Yes. Oily skin still needs water. A light gel moisturiser hydrates without feeling heavy or greasy.

What sunscreen should I use in Darwin?
A broad-spectrum SPF 50+, every day of the year. Choose a lightweight texture you enjoy wearing, because the best sunscreen is the one you actually use.

How often should I exfoliate in the Build-Up?
Once or twice a week is plenty for most skin types. More is not better.
